Care Of Wicker Chair Cushions
Do you have a wicker chair that needs a facelift – or maybe you have an old wicker piece of furniture that has served you well but has seen better days? One way to spruce up wicker chairs is to add a beautiful chair cushion. You can get these from many stores and shopping centres.
Wicker Chair Cushions: Making Them Fit
If you are planning on using the wicker chair cushions, they have to be fitted to the chair. Chairs come in a variety of styles with a variety of seat sizes, so you must correctly measure the chair before getting the cushions for it. There are two areas that must be measured to ensure a proper cushion fit:
Back – This is the height of the back, from the seat to the top and the width of the back. You need to know this because most cushions are held on to the chair by ties or strings attached to the poles or outer rods of the chair. You will want to make sure you the ties match the chair back.
Seat – This is the part you sit on and you will want to know the length and width. If you are planning to get wicker chair cushions for the seat, you will also want to decide on a thickness. (Personally, my feeling is that thicker cushions are more comfortable, but you will have to decide this for yourself).
Wicker Chair Cushions: Where to put them
Prior to purchasing a cushion, you will need to decide or know where the chare will be used. Will it be inside or outside. If it is inside, you will have a variety of fabrics and materials to choose from but if it is outside, you will have to make sure the fabric and stuffing is both water and sun proof. You do not want the rain and the sun to cause your fabric to fade, so check for fade resistance as well. Another consideration when thinking about rain is the possibility of mold so check for mold-resistance too.
Wicker Chair Cushions: Fabric is Better
People will see the fabric you choose before they know anything else about the wicker chair cushion. This is the first thing they see. This can be a good thing, because the proper material can be used to draw attention away from worn, broker or tired areas of the chair. If you are using the chair outside, choose a bright, cheerful, nature themed print. More subdued and plainer fabric is better for indoors. Ususally, wicker chair cushions are produced with synthetic material that will last longer than more fragile materials. Fortunately durable material is usually cheaper. .
Wicker Chair Cushions: What You Can’t See is Important
You need to put as much thought into what cannot be seen as what can, the inside of the cushion is what is felt. When you sit on the cushion, or lean back against it, you will feel the difference in filling. Filling can either be man-made or natural. The fill needs to return to its natural shape even after being sat on over and over again. Just like fabric, it should be water and mildew resistant and should be non-flammable. Breathable fabric is important, it will make the cushion much more comfortable when it is sat on for a long time.
Wicker Chair Cushions: Extra, Extra, Extra
There are endless add-ons you can put on your cushions: buttons, cords, ties... They are not really needed or necessary but they do increase the price. The choice is personal. But if you are going to be sitting on the wicker chair cushion, you might want to make sure whatever you add does not make the cushion uncomfortable. If the cushion is for decoration, you can be more creative.
Wicker Chair Cushions: Do It Yourself
You can find many books and patterns that will teach you how to use linens that are already in your house to make wicker chair cushions. Make sure that you consider all the factors previously discussed when choosing the fabric and the filling. Making your own cushion is an easy sewing project, but if you are not a sewer, there are still many pre-made or even custom-made options.
